How to use the LinkedIn Document Post Planner for PDF Carousels
- Add your PDF or type the numbers. Drop a PDF to read its size and page count on your device, or type the number of pages and a rough size per page. Nothing is uploaded.
- Pick the page shape. Choose A4, Letter, square, 4:5 portrait or 16:9 landscape. The tool notes how each shape tends to read on a phone.
- Read the limit check. The result shows your page count and estimated size against the 300 page and 100 MB limits documented for the LinkedIn API.
- Compare the page count band. See which common practice band your page count falls in, from a short post to a full deck.
- Copy the outline. Add your topic, then copy or download the Markdown outline with a hook page, content pages and a call to action page.
How the planner works
What it checks
It multiplies your page count by the size per page, or uses the real size of a dropped PDF, and compares the result with the document limits. If you drop a PDF, it also scans the file for its page tree and page objects to count pages. That scan reads the bytes only; it does not render the pages.
You can set a target total size, such as 10 MB, and see the budget per page and the percentage you would need to cut.
The rules it applies
Per Microsoft Learn, LinkedIn Documents API, checked October 2026: a document cannot exceed 100 MB and 300 pages, and PDF, PPT, PPTX, DOC and DOCX are supported. These are labelled as documented for the API throughout the tool.
The page count bands (under 5, 5 to 8, 9 to 12, 13 to 20, 21 and up) are common practice, not research and not a LinkedIn rule. The page shapes are common sizes, not required ones.
Limitations
Page counting is an estimate. PDFs that store their page list inside compressed object streams cannot be counted by a simple scan, and a PDF that was edited many times can contain pages that are no longer shown. Use the count as a check, and confirm it in your PDF viewer.
The size estimate for typed numbers is only as good as your size per page. Export your PDF and drop it in for the exact size.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best size for a LinkedIn carousel PDF?
LinkedIn does not publish one required page shape for documents, so there is no single right answer. Square 1:1 and 4:5 portrait pages are common choices because they fill a phone screen well, while A4 and 16:9 pages come from word processors and slide decks. Pick the shape first, then design every page at that shape.
How many pages can a LinkedIn document have?
The LinkedIn Documents API documents a limit of 300 pages and 100 MB, and accepts PDF, PPT, PPTX, DOC and DOCX files. Those are the figures documented for the API. The limits shown when you post by hand in the app are not published in a place this tool can check, so treat the numbers as the ceiling, not as advice on length.
How do I make a LinkedIn carousel?
Organic carousels on LinkedIn are posted as a document: you build one PDF where each page is a slide, then upload it. The API documentation says organic carousel posts are not supported there and only sponsored carousels are. This tool plans the PDF itself: how many pages, what shape and what goes on each one.
How many pages should a LinkedIn carousel have?
There is no official number. As common practice, a single lesson often lands between 5 and 8 pages and a how-to between 9 and 12. Anything past about 20 pages behaves more like a deck people save than a carousel people swipe. The planner shows which band your count is in and builds an outline for it.
Why is my carousel PDF so large?
Photos are almost always the cause. A page of plain text can be tiny, while a full page photo can weigh megabytes. Set a target size in the tool and it tells you the budget per page and how much you need to cut. Lower image quality, fewer photos and exporting at a smaller size are the usual levers.
Is my PDF uploaded when I drop it in?
No. The file is read in your browser to get its size and look for page entries. It never leaves your device. If the page count cannot be found, usually because the PDF compresses its page list, the tool says so and you can type the count yourself.
