How to use the Pinterest Pin Checker

  1. Enter a target keyword. Type the phrase you want the Pin to be found for, such as "sourdough starter".
  2. Fill in the Pin fields. Paste the title, description, alt text and destination link, and enter the image width and height in pixels.
  3. Read the previews. See where the feed title is cut and which text is over a limit.
  4. Fix and re-check. Work through the list. Each line shows its points and where the rule comes from.

How the Pin checker scores a Pin

The rules and where they come from

Lengths come from the Pinterest API v5 schema for creating a Pin: title 100, description 800, alt text 500, link 2048. We fetched the public schema in October 2026.

The feed cut-off, the 2:3 ratio, 1000 x 1500 pixels, PNG or JPEG and the 20 MB figure come from Pinterest's product specs for ads. We mark them as from Pinterest's ad specs, may differ for organic Pins.

Keyword placement, https and tracking parameters are our own guidance and are labelled that way on each line.

The score weights

Title 15, description 15, alt text 15, image shape and size 15, valid link 8, https 7, keyword in title 10, keyword in the first sentence of the description 10, no tracking parameters 5. A field earns its points only when it is present and within its limit. Skipped checks earn nothing, so enter every field to see the full score.

Limitations

The score shows how complete a Pin is. It does not predict reach or saves. Characters are counted by Unicode code point, so an emoji counts as one, and Pinterest may count some characters differently. We cannot see your image file, so type and file size are not checked.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Pinterest title character limit?

A Pin title can be up to 100 characters in the Pinterest API schema. Only the start of a long title is likely to show in feeds. Pinterest's ad specs say the first 40 characters may show depending on the device, or 30 for some scripts such as Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Arabic. That feed figure is from Pinterest's ad specs and may differ for organic Pins.

What is the Pinterest description limit?

The API schema allows 800 characters for a Pin description, not the 500 that is often repeated. Alt text is limited to 500 characters and the destination link to 2048.

What image size should a Pin be?

Pinterest recommends a 2:3 aspect ratio, or 1000 x 1500 pixels, in PNG or JPEG, with a desktop upload limit of 20 MB. These figures come from Pinterest's ad specs and may differ for organic Pins, so treat them as a safe default.

Where should the keyword go?

The tool checks that your keyword appears in the title and in the first sentence of the description, because those are the parts a person reads first. This is our rule of thumb, not a Pinterest requirement, and it is worth 20 of the 100 points.

Should I use hashtags on Pins?

Pinterest treats hashtags differently from most networks and its guidance has changed over time, so we do not give a target number. The tool counts the hashtags in your title and description so you can see them, and leaves them out of the score.

Should I remove UTM tags from the Pin link?

Not always. Tracking parameters make the link longer and can look untidy, but you may need them for your own analytics. The tool flags them so the choice is deliberate.
