How to use the Username Generator for Social Media
- Enter your name or brand. Type a person's name, a brand or a handle you already use. Accents are simplified to plain letters.
- Add keywords and niche words. Keywords describe what you do. Niche words such as "bakery" or "coach" are combined with your name in both orders. Both are optional.
- Choose separators and options. Underscores are on by default. Add periods or hyphens if you want more variety. Numbers and leetspeak are off unless you turn them on.
- Read the badges and copy. Each handle shows a format badge per network and a consistency score. Filter to the networks you need, then copy a handle or export the list.
How the username generator works
How ideas are generated
The generator combines your name words, keywords and niche words with a fixed set of patterns: first name and last name in both orders, an initial with a surname, a first name with an initial, name plus niche and niche plus name, keyword plus niche, short prefixes and suffixes, and a vowel-dropping abbreviation for long words. Every result is lowercased and cleaned so there are no doubled or trailing separators.
The list is ranked by consistency first, then by length, so handles that work everywhere come first. Non-Latin names produce no handles, because the networks listed here accept only Latin letters and digits in this field.
Format rules and where they come from
YouTube: 3 to 30 characters, letters and numbers plus underscores, hyphens and periods, not at the start or end, per YouTube Help "Handle naming guidelines", checked October 2026. Mastodon: up to 30 characters of letters, digits and underscore, per the Mastodon source code, checked October 2026; individual servers can be stricter. Bluesky: letters, digits and hyphens with no hyphen at either end, per the AT Protocol handle specification, checked October 2026.
X (4 to 15 characters, letters, digits, underscore), Instagram and Threads (up to 30, letters, digits, period, underscore) and TikTok (2 to 24, letters, digits, underscore, period, no trailing period) are format rules as documented publicly, approximate. Those networks' own help pages could not be fetched for a direct check, so the badges can be slightly off if a rule changed.
Limitations
The tool does not check availability, reserved words, impersonation policies or trademark conflicts. A handle that looks like a famous brand may be refused or taken down regardless of its format. Everything runs in your browser, and nothing you type is sent anywhere.
Frequently asked questions
What characters are allowed in an Instagram username?
As publicly documented, Instagram usernames can use letters, digits, periods and underscores, up to 30 characters. Hyphens, spaces and most symbols are not accepted. We could not fetch Instagram's help center directly, so treat this as the commonly documented rule and confirm in the app when you set the name.
Does this tool check if a username is available?
No. A green badge means the handle fits the format rules of that network. It does not mean the handle is free. No network offers a public lookup that a website like this can call, so the only reliable check is to type the handle into the network's own sign-up or settings screen.
Why do the suggestions avoid numbers by default?
Strings like "name4821" are the first thing people see when a plain handle is taken, and they are harder to say aloud and to remember. The tool starts with word-based patterns. Turn numbers on if you want short number suffixes added to the strongest ideas.
Can I use the same username on every network?
Only if it fits the strictest rules. X is capped at 15 characters with no periods, Bluesky does not accept underscores or periods, and YouTube does not accept a handle that starts or ends with a separator. The consistency score shows the share of the seven networks where each handle is valid. A short handle of letters and digits scores highest.
What is a Bluesky handle?
A Bluesky handle is a domain-style name such as yourname.bsky.social. The part you choose is a label of letters, digits and hyphens that cannot start or end with a hyphen, per the AT Protocol handle specification. Underscores and periods are not allowed inside that label. The 3 to 18 character range used here for a .bsky.social name is as documented publicly and approximate.
Do Threads usernames follow Instagram rules?
Threads sign-in runs through an Instagram account and the Threads username starts from it, so this tool applies the same rules to both. Treat that as the commonly documented behaviour and confirm in the app.
