How to use the YouTube Title Generator
- Type the topic. For a how-to, start with a verb, such as "bake sourdough bread". For other formats, a noun works, such as "sourdough bread".
- Pick a format. How-to, list, beginner guide, review, comparison, mistakes, challenge or explainer. For a comparison, add the second option.
- Read the highlighted part. The first 60 or so characters are highlighted. That is roughly what a phone shows before cutting the title, so the topic should be in it.
- Copy and adjust. Copy a title and make it true to the video: the real number of tips, the real time span, the real result.
Writing titles that survive the cut
How the titles are made
Each format has 16 templates. Your topic is shortened to about 50 characters at a whole word if it is longer, title-cased for every format except how-to (where it reads as a verb), and dropped into each template. Fifteen are shown; shuffle to see a different selection.
For a comparison, both options are needed. Titles never mention a brand you did not type.
Limits and sources
The 100 character title limit is YouTube's own and is shared with the YouTube Title and Description Checker on this site. The roughly 60 character mobile cut and the slightly longer desktop cut are observations from that checker, labelled approximate. Templates carry no claim about click-through rate.
Frequently asked questions
How long can a YouTube title be?
YouTube allows up to 100 characters in a title. Every idea here is 100 characters or fewer; a template that would run longer for your topic is skipped.
How much of a YouTube title shows in search?
It depends on the screen. On a phone, titles are often cut at around 60 characters, and desktop search shows a little more. These are observations, not documented figures, so this tool highlights roughly the first 60 characters as a guide: put the words people search for in that part.
Are these titles clickbait?
They are templates, so they can only be as honest as the video. Some include a number or a time span, such as "30 days". Change it to the real figure, or choose another title. A title that does not match the video tends to disappoint viewers.
Is this an AI title generator?
No. It uses 128 hand-written templates, 16 per format, filled with your topic. It works offline in your browser and has no usage limit.
Should I put the year or hashtags in a YouTube title?
Only when it helps: a year suits topics that change, like gear or software. Hashtags in a title use up characters; the YouTube Hashtag Generator on this site suggests three for the description instead.
