How the thread composer counts and splits
Counting rules per network
X: weighted length following the open twitter-text rules. Each link is 23, characters in the ranges 0 to 4351, 8192 to 8205, 8208 to 8223 and 8242 to 8247 weigh 1, everything else weighs 2, and an emoji sequence weighs 2 in total. Text is normalized to NFC first, so an accent typed as a separate mark counts the same as the combined letter. Limit: 280.
Bluesky: 300 graphemes, matching the maxGraphemes value in its post schema. Threads: 500 characters, counted here as graphemes with links counted in full, because Meta does not publish a counting rule we could verify.
How the split works
The text is divided at blank lines into paragraphs. Paragraphs that fit are kept whole and packed together while they fit. A paragraph that is too long is divided at sentence ends, and a sentence that is still too long is divided between words. The tool measures every candidate post with the real network count, so links and emoji are priced correctly while packing.
When numbering is on, the composer first reserves space for the widest label it will need (for example 12/12), then splits, and repeats if the thread turns out longer than the reserved width allowed.
Limitations
The X link matcher recognizes web addresses that start with http, https or www, and bare domains on a list of common endings such as .com, .org and .io. It is an approximation of X's full matcher, so a rare domain ending may be counted as plain text. Always read the live count before you post. Edits you make by hand are kept until you change the source text or settings.
Frequently asked questions
Does a link count toward the X character limit?
Yes, but at a fixed price. Every link counts as 23 characters on X however long it is, so a 120 character URL costs 23. Bluesky and this tool's Threads count do not shorten links, so there a link counts for every character you type.
Why does my emoji count as 2 on X?
X weights characters. Most Latin letters, digits and punctuation weigh 1, while emoji and characters from scripts such as Chinese, Japanese and Korean weigh 2. A whole emoji sequence, including a family or a flag, counts as 2 in total. The composer uses the same weights to decide where to cut.
How long can a post be on X, Threads and Bluesky?
X allows 280 weighted characters, Threads allows 500 characters and Bluesky allows 300 graphemes, which are characters as you see them. Each option in the composer applies the matching limit and shows the live count for every post.
Will the composer cut a word or a sentence in half?
It avoids both. It fills each post with whole paragraphs, then whole sentences, then whole words. The one exception is a single unbroken string longer than a post, such as a very long link on Bluesky. That is split on a character boundary and the tool tells you it happened.
Should I number my thread posts?
It is a style choice. Numbers like 1/7 tell readers how long the thread is and help them keep their place. Numbers use some of each post's space, so the composer reserves room for them before splitting and never lets a numbered post go over the limit.
Can I schedule the thread from here?
This page prepares and counts your posts and copies them. To schedule a thread on X, paste the posts into the X scheduler and pick a time.
