How to use the Threads Character Counter

  1. Paste the post. Type or paste your Threads post. The main count follows the rule in Meta's Threads API documentation.
  2. Check emoji. Each emoji counts as its UTF-8 byte length, usually 4 and sometimes much more for combined emoji such as families or flags.
  3. Check links. Up to 5 different links are allowed in a post. The same link twice counts once.
  4. Trim the highlighted part. If the post is over 500, the part past the limit is highlighted so you know what to cut.

Counting rules, with sources

How the count is made

Text is split into the characters you see. A letter, digit, space or accented letter costs 1. A character that is an emoji costs its UTF-8 byte length. Links count in full, like any other text, and are also counted against the 5 link maximum by their unique address.

Character splitting is shared with the Grapheme Limit Checker on this site and link detection with the Thread Composer. Link detection covers http, https and www addresses and bare domains on common endings.

All rules here come from Meta's Threads API "Posts" documentation on developers.facebook.com, checked October 2026: the 500 character text limit, emoji counted as UTF-8 bytes, and the limit of 5 links per post.

Frequently asked questions

What is the character limit on Threads?

500 characters per post. Meta's Threads API documentation, checked October 2026, states that text posts are limited to 500 characters. Longer thoughts can go in a reply chain.

Why do emoji use more than one character on Threads?

Meta's Threads API documentation says emoji are counted as the number of UTF-8 bytes. A thumbs up is 4 bytes, a red heart with its style marker is 6, and a family emoji can be 18 or more. So 100 emoji could use most of the 500. The visible character count is shown too, for comparison.

How many links can a Threads post have?

At most 5. Per Meta's documentation, every unique URL in the text counts, and since 22 December 2025 a post with more than five is rejected. A link attachment that repeats a URL already in the text counts once.

Does the Threads app count the same way?

Not always. The rules above are the published API rules that scheduling and publishing tools work under. The Threads app's own counter may count an emoji as one character. Because the API count is the stricter one, a post that fits here should fit in the app too.
