Hashtag Set Rotator

Paste your hashtag pool or named groups and get rotating sets with a tag from every group, capped overlap and per-set character cost. Free, runs in your browser.

0 unique tags in 0 groups.

The Instagram API documentation caps a caption at 30 hashtags. Instagram has publicly suggested a small number, and 3 to 5 is the figure shared by its creator team. That is a public suggestion, not a rule, so 5 is only the starting point here.

  • Add some hashtags to the pool first.

How to use the Hashtag Set Rotator

  1. Paste your pool. Type or paste hashtags. To keep groups, start a line with a name and a colon, such as Brand: #acme #acmetools.
  2. Choose the size. Pick the network, how many sets you want, how many tags go in each and how many tags two neighbouring sets may share.
  3. Generate and check. Read any warning, then look at the character cost under each set. Press Reshuffle for a different arrangement.
  4. Copy a set per post. Use the 4 week preview to see which set goes on which post, and copy each one with its button.

How the sets are built

The rules it applies

Tags are de-duplicated without regard to case across the whole pool. For each set the tool first takes one tag from every group, then fills the remaining slots from the whole pool. At each pick it prefers the tag used least so far, and tags that appeared in the previous set are avoided unless the overlap allowance has room.

The same seed gives the same sets. Reshuffle changes the seed. The last set is also compared with the first, because the rotation wraps around.

Network limits and sources

Instagram: up to 30 hashtags per caption, per the Instagram Platform content publishing reference on developers.facebook.com, checked October 2026. The smaller starting count of 5 reflects public advice, not a rule.

Character cost shows the length of the set including hash signs and spaces, so you can see what is left of the post. X counts 280 weighted characters, Threads 500, Bluesky 300 and TikTok captions up to 2200, from each network's developer documentation. Other networks show the cost without a limit because no figure was checked.

Limitations

The tool checks arrangement, not relevance. It cannot tell whether a tag fits your post, is banned or is in use for something else. Read each set before you publish.

Frequently asked questions

Why rotate hashtag sets at all?

A single block pasted on every post is easy to forget and easy to overstuff. Rotating a few sets keeps each post to a short list that fits it, and you reach different tags over a month. This tool does not claim that rotation lifts reach. It makes the habit easier to keep.

How do groups work?

Put a name and a colon at the start of a line, then the tags: Brand: #acme #acmetools. Every set then gets at least one tag from each group, so each post carries a branded tag, a topic tag and a reach tag, for example. If you have more groups than slots, the tool tells you.

What does the overlap setting do?

It limits how many tags two sets that run one after the other may share. Set it to 1 and neighbouring posts differ in all but one tag. If your pool is too small to manage it, the tool says so and shows the real figure.

How many hashtags should a set hold on Instagram?

The Instagram API documentation allows up to 30 per caption, and the tool never goes above that. The number Instagram has publicly suggested is far smaller, 3 to 5. That is a suggestion, not a rule, and the tool starts at 5. You can raise it, and the choice is yours.

How is this different from the Hashtag Checker?

The Hashtag Checker looks at a caption you already wrote: duplicates, odd characters, counts per network. This tool builds the sets in the first place. Run the sets you like through the checker before you publish.

Is my pool saved?

Only in your own browser, if you press Save pool, and only if your browser allows it. Nothing is uploaded. Clear it any time with the Clear saved pool button.
