How to use the Quote Card Text Fitter
- Enter the quote and who said it. Paste the quote, add the attribution if you have one, and leave the line limit blank to start.
- Pick the card size. Choose square 1:1, portrait 4:5, story 9:16 or landscape 16:9, then set the padding with the slider.
- Check the line breaks. The tool breaks lines after commas and full stops when widths allow and avoids a one-word last line. Tap a pause suggestion to force a break there.
- Download. Choose a style, typeface and alignment, then download the PNG at full card resolution.
How the quote fitter works
What it calculates
The usable area is the card minus the padding on every side. Line height is 1.25 times the font size, and an attribution takes about 40 percent of the quote size plus a gap of 0.9 times the font size. A fit must satisfy the width of every line, the optional maximum line count and the total height.
The results panel shows the chosen font size, the number of lines and how many characters sit on each line, so you can spot a very short or very long line before you export.
Sources and rules of thumb
Aspect ratio range for Instagram feed images (4:5 to 1.91:1) and the 9:16 recommendation for stories: Meta's Instagram Platform content publishing documentation, checked October 2026. Pixel sizes are common working sizes, not network rules.
Widow and orphan avoidance and punctuation-led breaks are long-standing typesetting conventions, applied here as weighted preferences, not hard rules.
Limitations
Measurement uses your browser's canvas, so results depend on the fonts installed on your device. Right-to-left scripts and text that mixes scripts are not given special handling. Networks recompress images on upload, which can soften very small text, so keep a quote readable at phone size.
Frequently asked questions
How does it work out the largest font size?
It measures the real text in your browser at a trial size, wraps it to the width inside your padding and checks that the lines, the attribution and the spacing fit the height. It repeats this with a binary search, so a size of 1,000 pixels is never tried one pixel at a time, and keeps the biggest whole pixel size that fits.
What if my quote contains one very long word?
The font shrinks until that word fits on a single line, because cutting a word in half looks like an error on a quote card. If you would rather keep the size, tick the option that lets long words be cut, or edit the word.
How are line breaks chosen?
Lines are balanced so none is far shorter than the others, a break after a comma, semicolon or full stop is preferred, and a break after a small word such as the or of is discouraged. A last line with a single word, called a widow, is penalised. If you break lines yourself, tick keep my line breaks and each of your lines is kept whole.
Which card sizes are included, and are they official?
Square 1080 x 1080, portrait 1080 x 1350, story 1080 x 1920 and landscape 1920 x 1080. These are common working sizes, not rules from any network. Instagram's API documents a 4:5 to 1.91:1 range for feed images and recommends 9:16 for stories, and the file keeps the exact aspect ratio you choose.
How is this different from the Post to Image Card tool?
This tool is typography only: it finds the font size, balanced line breaks, widow and orphan handling and maximum line count that make a quote fit a card, and shows the character count of each line. Post to Image Card is the other tool: it renders a whole social post with a name and handle, with no quote fitting.
Which fonts does it use?
Your device's built-in serif, sans and monospace fonts, so the measurement matches what is drawn. The same quote may therefore fit at a slightly different size on a different computer. Nothing is uploaded and no web fonts are loaded.
